A lintel is a horizontal structural element that is placed across the top of a door or window opening, or over an open space between two vertical supports such as columns or pillars. Lintels are used to transfer the load of the structure to the vertical supports on either side of the opening or space, and to provide additional support for the structure above. Lintels can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, stone, concrete, metals, and composite materials. They can be plain or highly decorative, depending on the architectural style of the building. Lintels have been used in construction for thousands of years and are still a common feature of modern buildings.
